What is the National e-Mexico System?

The National e-Mexico System is a national technology project whose purpose is to eliminate the barriers currently existing to getting information and public services.  This project also seeks to close the technological divide in the country and between the Mexican people and the rest of the world.  With the e-Mexico project, the Mexican government expects to transform the country through the application of modern technology and business interconnections, linking communication between government departments and starting an educational reform in order to create a digital Mexico and usher in a new era.

What is the mission of the National e-Mexico System Portal?

Its Mission is being an agent of change for the country by integrating the efforts made by the different public and private players in bridging the digital divide and the social and economic differences existing among Mexicans, through a system with technological and social components that will provide basic services such as learning, health, commercial exchange and government filing positions, at the same time spearheading the technological development of Mexico.

What is the e-Mexico portal?

The e-Mexico Portal is the means by which the National e-Mexico System responds to the challenge of being an integrating project that articulates the interests of the different government levels, of different states and public agencies, of the telecommunication network operators, and chambers and associations linked to Information and Communications Technologies, as well as different institutions, so as to expand the coverage of basic services such as education, health, economy, government and science, technology and industry, and other community services.

Why is the e-Mexico Portal a space for all Mexicans?

The e-Mexico project seeks to close the digital divide existing between the haves and have-nots as regards to access to technology. That is including all Mexicans in the era of Information Technologies. Though the e-Mexico portal, the citizen-user has an electronic channel for participation, a customized community space in which to share similarities and common interests, and relevant information selected and culled for each profile or community.

What is the digital or technological divide?

The digital or technological divide refers to the gap existing between those who have access to information technology and knowledge, and those who do not.   This divide is creating a new kind of social and economic segregation based on information. While the people who have or can have access are increasingly sophisticated in terms of their technological involvement (using personal digital assistants, cellular phones with internet access, portable computers, etc.) the people who do not have access are staying behind by being less informed and less qualified as to technology related skills.  There is no doubt that this divide can turn into a real threat that could exacerbate social and economic differences between individuals, corporations and e even nations.

How is the National e-Mexico System going to reach all of the corners of the nation?

In Mexico, most of the people do not have telephone nor access to a computer, let alone the Internet.  Nevertheless, with e-Mexico the plan is to take telephony and other information technologies to approximately 2500 municipalities and some 14 thousand locations in the country within the next five years, which will represent an increase of 30 to 40 percent in such service coverage.  The purpose of this is that the most remote communities can have at least a minimum trunk of two megabits that will facilitate access to four ports:  one for government, another for health, another for education and one more for commerce.

What is a Community Portal?

Community portals provide citizens with greater access to combined public services and to the renewal of the government democratic process.  This includes a cultural change, focusing on the citizen, implementing better practices, creating value for the citizens and democratic renovation. This fact implies the application of Information and Communication Technologies in order to provide information to those in need of it, to facilitate their decisions, both at a personal and at a community level, regarding management or policies.  Thus facilitating effective negotiations between the different process actors.

What is a digital community?

The concept of Digital Community needs to be understood in two senses: 1) As the physical specific place where one can concur to interact and 2) as a population or group of people with common interests, characteristics and needs.  Different social groups such as farmers, students, migrants, and others, maintain a notion of belonging to society, family or friends, but through the e-Mexico Portal, they will always be able to resort to a more intimate and secluded place (such as their own community), through which they can express their concerns and share their experiences with people in similar situations.

Why register with the e-Mexico portal?

Registering as an e-Mexico Portal user allows you to be an active member of the Portal and use its functions such as Forums, Chats, Bulletin Boards, Calendar of Events, Voting, Publishing and Querying Information.

How can I make suggestions to the e-Mexico Portal?

By just using the "Mailbox" function that appears on the upper part of the Portal you will be able to send an email to the e-Mexico Portal Administrator, who will then take the suggestion comment or request into account.
